Chapter Fourteen
Lucas ambled back down the hall to his office. His nose throbbed, and if it wasnât broken, itâd be a miracle. A slow smile spread over his face at the thought. That would make two miracles, because his first was that Tommy Black officially assaulted an officer. Six officers, actually, while high, angry and extremely disorderly. Heâd threatened to kill all the injured cops, blow up the station, murder his girlfriend and a slew of other vicious things while on camera. So, Anise would finally be safe, at least for a little while, because Tommy would definitely get some real jail time now. With or without her testimony.
He swung into his office with an apologetic grin. âSorry that took so long.â
The rest of the words stalled on his tongue. His office was empty.
He went back into the hall. âGwen?â he called, looking in both directions before heading toward the officersâ restrooms and vestibule with vending machines. He knocked on the bathroom door, then pressed it open an inch. âGwen?â
âWhat are you doing?â Derek asked, dropping change into the vending machine.
âLooking for Gwen.â He fought against a swell of panic, urging himself to be sensible. She hadnât been abducted inside a police station. âI thought you had work to do.â
âI do, and what do you mean, looking for Gwen?â Derek asked, retrieving an ice-cold soda and handing it to his brother. âFor your face.â
Lucas held the can to his swollen nose. âSheâs not in my office or the ladiesâ room. Where was she when you left her?â
âIn your office,â Derek said, concern changing his usually smug expression.
âCheck around back. Find someone who saw her leave my office. Iâm heading to the lobby. If thereâs any chance she was taken outside during all that racket, itâll be caught on camera.â
Derek broke left, heading toward the nearby desks and offices.
Lucas made a run for the lobby. He pushed through the automatically locking security door, then cut past the handful of people waiting to sign in. âHey,â he called, sliding in beside the next guest and drawing the young female officerâs attention. âThe woman I had in my office, Gwen Kind, have you seen her?â
Lanie frowned. She had an ice pack against her swollen cheek and a scowl on her face. âYour guy Black sure caused a hell of a lot of trouble out here. He kicked me in the face when I tried to keep Banisterâs guy from running out the front door.â
Lucas straightened, raking frustrated hands through his hair. âGwenâs missing, and sheâs in danger,â he said. âI need to know she wasnât taken during the chaos. Buzz me in to look at the security feed.â
Lanie buzzed him through the door separating her from the lobby. Her scowl melted into something more like shock. âThe redhead? You think thatâs possible?â
He froze, snapping his attention to her. âWhy? Did you see her?â Heat crawled up his neck and over his face. If Lanie had seen Gwen in the lobby, sheâd been only a few yards from the front door.
